Ailing resident airlifted off Kalepa Ridge Saturday

HANAMA‘ULU — Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters responded to a man in distress Saturday afternoon along the Kalepa Ridge, according to a county press release.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., first responders were notified of a 59-year-old male resident who was having difficulty breathing along the Kalepa Ridge trail.

Bystanders at the scene reported that the man became unresponsive, and they began administering CPR. KFD rescue personnel aboard the county helicopter were dispatched to the scene, where they found the man, who had regained consciousness, lying on the ground.

Rescuers airlifted the man using a Stokes litter to a landing zone at Kaua‘i Beach Resort.

Awaiting Kapa‘a firefighters and American Medical Response medics provided additional support, and the man was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in serious condition for further treatment.
