Blue Dolphin celebrates 30 years

Kumu Sabra Kauka was up with the birds Thursday to bless a new boat for Blue Dolphin Charters at the marine tourism leader’s Port Allen facilities.

“When I started Blue Dolphin Charters 30 years ago, I wanted to share the beauty of Kauai’s ocean and coastline in a way that was respectful to the land, sea and culture,” said Blue Dolphin Charters’ founder Terry Donnelly.

Longtime waterman Donnelly started Blue Dolphin Charters on July 3, 1995. The group has grown from a single-boat operation into an award-winning leader in marine tourism, offering guests “unforgettable journeys along the world-famous Napali Coast, and ‘The Forbidden Island’ of Niihau,” according to a press release.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch it grow and see generations of families come back year after year,” Donnelly said. “Watching families, honeymooners and adventurers marvel at humpback whales, spinner dolphins and colorful reefs, and knowing we played a part, has been the greatest reward. Our crew has grown into an extended ohana, and together, we cherish every journey offshore.”

Blue Dolphin Charters has become a cornerstone of Kauai’s visitor industry after taking thousands of guests on ocean adventures.

The Blue Dolphin Charters’ ohana has grown to become one of four major sponsors for the annual Back to School Bash that equips school-aged keiki with school supplies, and contributed to the community well-being through participating as one of the leading contributors to The Christmas Fund coordinated by the Zonta Club of Kauai to offer holiday gifts to those who are unable to afford them.

General Manager Shaye Clarke has been at the helm of Blue Dolphin Charters for the past eight years. She continues the company’s legacy with a focus on guest experience, marine education, community partnerships and sustainable practice.

“We are honored to carry forward what Terry started,” Clarke said. “Our team is passionate about what we do — whether it’s navigating sea caves, spotting dolphins, or watching the joy on a guest’s face during their first whale sighting. That is the heart of what makes Blue Dolphin Charters so special.”

As Blue Dolphin Charters celebrates three decades, the company remains committed to innovation and preservation. Future plans include more educational tours fort keiki, reef friendly initiatives and expanded community partnerships on Kauai.

As a gesture of appreciation for the continued support over the years, Blue Dolphin Charters is hosting a 30th Anniversary Celebration Giveaway where one winner will receive a prize package valued at more than $6,000 — including a two-night stay at both the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, and the Koloa Landing Resort, along with a selection of premium activities, dining experiences and retail offerings.
