Boone scores an albatross at Puakea

LIHUE — Boone Clifton, playing in the Girls 9-10 Flight at the Kauai Junior Golf Association one-day tournament on Sunday at the Puakea Golf Course, took her flight with a tournament total 90.

“We had a kid make an Albatross on Hole today,” said Paul Ito, who normally supplies information from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf matches. “Playing from the Blue Fairway tees, Boone Clifton crushed her drive, and then, holed out with a 6 Iron to make a 2 on the par five 11th hole for an albatross.”

According to the Professional Golf Association, “an albatross is achieved when a player either aces a par 4, or scores a 2 on a par 5.”

Former longtime Golf Digest writer Bill Fields states the odds of an albatross are an estimated 6 million to 1.

“This isn’t the first time Boone has pulled off an incredible shot,” Ito said. “During a KJGA event last year, Boone made an ace, or a hole in one, on the par 3, 16th hole at Puakea. I think it’s safe to say that Boone likes playing at Puakea.”

Other flight winners for the one-day tournament include Stirling McLoughlin, playing of the green tees, winning the Boys 15-18 Flight with an 83; Caleb Ito, playing off the Blue tees, taking the Boys 13-14 Flight with a 74; Janoa Costa, playing off the White tees, taking the Boys 11-12 Flight with a 105; Action Herndon, playing off the White tees, taking the Boys 9-10 Flight with a 95; Sydney Ito, shooting off the White tees, taking the Girls 15-18 Flight with a 94; Lauryn Lee, playing off the White tees, ltaking the Girls 13-14 Flight with an 84; and Kenna Silva, playing off the Red tees, taking the Girls 11-12 Flight with a 93.

The Kauai Junior Gold Association was started in 1960s by Chica Ishii, Mitchell Ota, Toyo Shirai and Tom Tomimoto because of their desire to introduce youngsters to the sport, and a willingness to help them develop their golf skills.

The objective of the KJGA is to provide an environment where its junior members can enjoy the game of golf and progress at his or her own rate while promoting and preserving the traditions and integrity of the game of golf.
