Brown-water advisories affect Wailua, Po‘ipu

LIHU‘E — Brown-water advisories are in effect for Wailua Bay, Lydgate Park and Koloa Landing, and the state Department of Health Clean Water Branch advises “if it’s brown, turn around,” for recreating in the water.

The branch also advised that all routine beach monitoring for water quality has been suspended due to the shelter-in-place order from Gov. David Ige.

“Although all state and county parks have been closed for public gatherings, the public is still allowed to swim, surf and recreate in the water, for exercise, while being mindful of social-distancing requirements,” the DOH CWB said in a news release.

”No updated water-quality testing information will be available to the public to inform personal risk in recreating in the water, so please use common sense and stay safe,” the CWB said in the release.

John Alderete of the Surfrider Kaua‘i Blue Water Task Force, which also does water-quality testing in the surf breaks and water-recreation areas around Kaua‘i, said their volunteer-based water sampling has also been suspended.
