CHRISTMAS FUND: Despite obstacles, family of four remain hopeful

Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names), who are facing challenges and would appreciate a little help this holiday season.

The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.

The following are some stories we would like to share with our readers.

• Jasmine has a big family — three boys (ages 6, 11 and 15), and three girls (ages 2, 5 and 13). Jasmine is a devoted mother to six children who bravely left an abusive home to protect her family. Her oldest son helps care for his siblings, while the other two boys are curious and playful. Her daughters bring joy and laughter despite their circumstances. The family needs clothing, basic household items, and appropriate-age toys to brighten their Christmas. Jasmine hopes to create a holiday that reminds her children they are loved, safe and worthy of happiness. A few small gifts would mean the world to this resilient family.

• Tasha has two boys, ages 3 and 8, and one daughter who is 11. They have endured chronic homelessness, and Tasha has faced ongoing domestic abuse. Despite these obstacles, these four remain hopeful. As a thoughtful and protective big sister, she adores her mother and loves a good story. The children are imaginative and full of energy. The family is working toward stability and healing, but the holidays feel daunting. Tasha would be grateful for clothes and simple toys to bring joy to her children. She dreams of a Christmas where her kids can laugh and feel safe, even if just for a moment. Any support would help restore their sense of belonging.

• Alohi came to the shelter with her six children after enduring severe domestic violence from her husband. Her oldest is 11 and is quiet and protective, while the 3-year-old is playful and curious. Her daughters — ages 10, 4 and newborn twins Hope and Faith — are adjusting to life in the shelter. Alohi is focused on rebuilding her life and nurturing her children through this transition. The family needs baby supplies, clothing and small gifts to make the holidays special. Alohi hopes to give her children a Christmas filled with warmth and love, reminding them that brighter days are ahead.

• Danielle has two sons (ages 4 and 7), and one daughter (age 8). They left a harmful home environment to find safety. Ella loves reading and dreams of becoming a teacher, Kaden enjoys puzzles and games, and Mason is a cheerful toddler who loves music. Dani is working hard to provide stability and comfort, but the holidays are a challenge. The family would appreciate basic clothing and toys to help the children feel joy and normalcy. Dani hopes this Christmas can be a turning point of peace and happiness that reminds them they are not alone.

Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.

Donations may be made by way of the website, Zonta-Kauai.org, or checks can be made payable to The Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766.
