Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names), who are facing challenges and would appreciate a little help this holiday season.
The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.
The following are some stories we would like to share with our readers.
• Macky is a dedicated single father raising four young daughters. He relies on the support of his family to care for his youngest child while he works hard to provide for his children’s basic needs. Despite his best efforts, covering anything beyond the essentials is often a struggle for him. Macky is not requesting anything for himself, but he hopes to bring some joy to his daughters during the Christmas season. He would greatly appreciate assistance in getting each of them a special gift: Kaira (11): enjoys make-up and hair accessories; Noe (10): loves reading and solving puzzles; Leslie (8): is fond of building blocks and Legos; Sammy (4): would be delighted to receive dolls. Macky is grateful for any support provided and values anything that is given to his family.
• Nancy is an elderly woman who serves as the primary caregiver for her three beloved granddaughters: Kristy (11), Kyra (9), and Bree (5). Living on a fixed income and relying on outside assistance, Nancy faces significant challenges in providing for her family’s daily needs. Despite these difficulties, Nancy finds joy in cooking and wishes to prepare a special meal for her granddaughters. She would be grateful for a gift card to help purchase food, making it possible for her to treat her family to a nice meal. In addition to supporting Nancy’s desire to cook, specific gifts for her granddaughters would bring happiness to each child. Kristy would appreciate make-up and hair accessories, Kyra enjoys solving puzzles, and Bree would be delighted to receive a doll. These thoughtful gifts would help brighten their lives and make their everyday experiences more joyful.
• Nani is a single woman who is currently working hard to rebuild her life after facing significant challenges. She recently became houseless when the home she was living in was sold. Fortunately, with the support of a friend, she was able to secure new housing and begin the process of recovery. Throughout this difficult period, Nani has shown resilience and determination as she works to put her life back together. One of the ways she finds comfort and relaxation is through books and puzzles, which help her unwind and cope with stress. This season, having access to these items would greatly support Nani’s well-being and aid her in her journey toward stability.
Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.
