Christmas — Amy Christmas of Hawaiian Palm Baskets, that is — was in the house at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa on Halloween Day.
“It’s so nice the resort does something like this for the employees,” said Christmas, a longtime vendor with the Grand Hyatt Kauai. “I haven’t had a chance to see any of the displays, but everyone seem to be having a lot of fun.”
The Grand Hyatt Kauai hosted a pumpkin carving display Friday on the second day of its two-day Halloween celebration. Pumpkin creations by the different resort departments and employees were set out on display, and guests and spectators were invited to cast a vote on their favorite.
The displays were accompanied by Grand Hyatt Kauai employees who dressed for the season. Fairies, butterflies and superheroes flitted around the resort’s lobby, their spirit and smiles of the season being caught by resort guests who photographed the creations.
The pumpkin display follows the Howloween Canine Costume contest on Thursday that attracted a wide variety of animals vying for both people and animal prizes as a fundraiser for the Kauai Humane Society pet food bank.
Maile, an alumnus of the Kauai Humane Society, captured the Pet and People category judging as a hula dancer whose skirt danced in the breezy wind blowing off Haupu.
Ruby, an alumnus of the Kauai Animal Welfare Society, used corn starch to enhance her appearance to be judged the scariest.
The cutest animal judging was earned by Waffles who strutted her Chicken and Waffles look past the corps of judges.
These two days have been a lot of fun, said Diann Hartman, the Grand Hyatt Kauai marketing and communications director. And there is more to come.
“We have Thanksgiving, and the lighting of the holiday lights the day after Thanksgiving,” Hartmann said. “We hope to see everyone there.”
Meanwhile, Amy Christmas was busy chasing down one of the feathers from her red stole.
“I’m losing my feathers,” Christmas said. “I’m a Flamboyant Fortune Teller, and I predict everyone having a perfect day.”
