Coffee, bees and music on tap

PUHI — Students from Kauai Community College’s entrepreneurship program have launched HI Joe! at the Saturday Kauai Community Market on the KCC campus.

HI Joe! is a coffee shop that sells only Hawaii-grown and Hawaii-roasted coffee. The selection includes coffee from Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai. Building on the knowledge and skills learned in class, the students have created a pop-up storefront to test their business concept and gain valuable operation, marketing and financial management experience.

The class will be operating HI Joe! every Saturday through Nov. 16. Information: Dirk Soma, dsoma@hawaii.edu or 245-8228

Kauai Community College is the only state-certified queen bee breeder and seller on Kauai. Electronics and engineering professor Dr. Georgeanne Purvinis, who oversees the apiary program, says, “One of the main goals of the apiary program is to protect our bees from illegal imports, to educate, and to help sustainable agriculture.”

Contact kccbees@hawaii.edu to obtain a queen bee. The college also offers a credit class, Introduction to Beekeeping. Contact: Purvinis, purvinis@hawaii.edu or 245-8219

The KCC Music and Drama program is gearing up for its May 2020 production of “Siddhartha: Seeker of Truth,” an original musical by KCC professor Greg Shepherd. Auditions will be held in December for the general public. Shepherd will stage direct, Monica Chung is music director, and Dallas McCurley is choreographer and lighting designer.

The musical traces the coming of age of a contemporary college student who reads the novel “Siddhartha” in college and decides to go off on a search for truth of his own, just like the title character of the novel. The show has numerous acting and singing opportunities for performers of all ages.
