WAILUA — The Central Pacific Bank Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship regatta takes place on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. on the Wailua River, with nothing set in stone.
During the regatta held Saturday, Island School earned first place honor and points in Junior Varsity Girls and the Varsity Mixed runs only to be matched by Kauai High School teams who earned first place in the Junior Varsity Mixed, and their fourth straight Varsity Boys race.
Kapaa High School finished with a first place in Junior Varsity Boys, and Waimea High School captured first place in the Varsity Girls race.
Kapaa went on to finish in second place in the JV Girls, JV Mixed, and Varsity Boys while Kauai High School ended up with silver in the JV Boys, Varsity Girls and Varsity Mixed.
During the Varsity Girls race, Island School girls, who showed strong in the first half of the KIF paddling season at the long distance regattas, was bumped from the final race by just .04 second by the Red Raider wahine during the preliminary run.
The preliminary run was won by the Waimea wahine who crossed the finish line on a paddle that stopped the clocks at 4 minutes, 12.03 seconds. Kapaa Girls A team followed on a 4:14.85 run with Kauai Girls in third with a 4:16.01 paddle followed by the Voyager women crew stopping the clocks at 4:16.054.
During the finals, Waimea wahine coasted to the top on a 4:15.27 run, nearly 9 seconds faster than Kauai. Kapaa Girls were disqualified after burying the flag at the quarter-mile mark.
In the Varsity Boys run, Kauai High School kane team picked up its fourth straight first place after taking the final race of that division nearly three seconds ahead of the Kapaa A team.
Waimea High School Varsity Mixed team was eliminated from the finals after being unable to break the 4-minute mark during the preliminaries.
Island School captured the finals on a 3:50.46 run followed by Kauai A team at 3:52.69. Kapaa, who posted a 3:57.46 run during the preliminary, settled for third place by finishing at 4:02.45.
The Voyagers took the JV Girls race by about a second faster than Kapaa with its run that ended at 4:30.80, and Kapaa broke the 4-minute mark during the JV Boys race with its 3:56.63 finish. Kauai was second at 4:02.87.
Kauai captured the JV Mixed race on a 4:07.56 paddle followed by Kapaa at 4:08.05. Island School finished third at 4:16.27.
The first race for the CPB KIF Championship Regatta is scheduled to be on the water at 9 a.m.
