The Waimea boys cross country team and the Kapaa girls cross country team won the Kauai Interscholastic Federation meet held Saturday in an afternoon heat hosted by Waimea High School.
Traditionally, the course layout spanned the Menehune campus and adjoining Cook Field. However, the ongoing construction projects at the Waimea campus moved the course to cover the Waimea Canyon Park and adjoining Waimea Canyon Middle School campus which were bathed in the return of the trade winds.
Waimea runner Cedric Crampton-Nabaa set the pace for the 59-runner boys field by completing the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 16.21 seconds. The pace-setting run also helped lead the Menehune runners to the first place position with 31 points. The top five scoring Menehune boys finished in the race’s overall Top 10.
Just two points back, the Kauai boys finished with 33 points. Kapaa boys rounded out the scoring in third place with 60 points.
Kauai runner Liam Juvan dogged Crapton-Nabaa throughout the 3-mile course and stopped the clocks at 18:37.76 in second place overall. When Kauai’s second runner Tai Ito-Fernandez crossed the line in third overall, the Red Raiders took the lead in team scoring, and held on until Kauai’s fourth runner crossed 11th overall, and the Raiders’ fifth scoring runner crossed 15th overall.
Kauai maintained its competitive edge into the girls’ race where it finished in second place by just one point over host Waimea High School.
With the absence of Kauai runner Aileah Villatora setting the pace for the girls’ field, Kapaa’s Ashlyn Worley set the pace for the 30-runner pack. She finished the course at 21:41.03 to lead the Kapaa girls to first place with 27 points when the Warrior wahine pushed its top five scoring runners across the line in the race’s Top 10.
Kauai girls, led by Laney Carvalho finishing in fourth place overall followed with 66 points in second place, and host Waimea challenging with 67 points for third place. Waimea’s top runner, Seija Carter, finished in sixth place overall.
The next cross country race is the KIF Championship run, hosted by Island School. The runners take to the Puhi campus course on Oct. 18 when the first race starts at 7:30 a.m.
