WAIMEA — A single-vehicle traffic incident that occurred Saturday morning resulted in multiple injuries and a temporary highway closure.
On Saturday, at approximately 10:30 a.m., a compact SUV with six occupants was traveling eastbound on Kaumualii Highway when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a tree on the westbound shoulder.
Upon arrival, first responders located the driver, a 29-year-old woman from Kekaha, who appeared to be unconscious, along with five children who had also sustained injuries.
The driver was taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital and was later airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. Three of the children were transferred to Kapiolani Medical Center in serious condition, while two were treated and released from Wilcox Medical Center.
Kaumualii Highway was closed in both directions for approximately one and a half hours while the Kauai Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Speed and impairment do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash; however, the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to call Officer Himongala at (808) 241-1617. Those wishing to remain anonymous can provide information by calling Crime Stoppers Kauai at (808) 246-8300, submitting a tip at crimestopperskauai.org, or through the Crime Stoppers Kauai P3 Tips Mobile App.
