DOW Kuhio Highway project ready to go

LIHUE — Work on Phase I of the Kuhio Highway (Hardy-Oxford) Waterline Project is ready to start during the project blessing that was held on Oct. 3, hosted by the Department of Water, Contractor Alpha, Inc., and Construction Manager Bowers + Kubota.

Phase I is scheduled to start in October, and Phase II will start in December for the project that involves the replacement of aging water main infrastructure to meet current Water System Standards, including fire flow requirements.

“This was indeed a glorious event,” said DOW Manager and Chief Engineer Joe Tait in a press release. “We extend our sincere gratitude to our supportive board members and elected officials for joining us. As we move forward with this vital project, we remain committed to keeping our community informed, while working diligently to minimize any unnecessary disruptions.”

Impacted areas will include Kuhio Highway from Hardy Street to Oxford Street in Lihue, and Poinciana Street from Kuhio Highway to Jerves Street.

Kahu Jade Waialeale Battad, speaking on the importance and significance of water, officiated the blessing at the project’s site. The event was attended by dignitaries including Tait, Rep. Luke Evslin, Board of Water Supply Vice-Chair Tom Shigemoto, County Engineer Troy Tanigawa, representing Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, and Project Foreman Richard Waalani Jr.
