LIHUE — “Imagine a Day Without Water” is a National Day of Action when communities nationwide pause to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives and the critical need to invest in aging water infrastructure to ensure access for future generations.
As part of the observance, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami issued a proclamation declaring Oct. 16 as “Imagine a Day Without Water 2025” in the County of Kauai.
“Water connects every part of life on Kauai, from our health and safety to our environment and economy,” Kawakami said. “Imagine a Day Without Water reminds us how vital this resource is and why we must continue to invest in protecting it so that future generations can enjoy clean, safe and reliable water across our island.”
The Department of Water supports The Value of Water Campaign, along with the American Water Works Association by inviting the public to take this time to pause and reflect on the inconvenience of a day without water — no showers, no flushing toilets, no watering gardens, no washing clothes or dishes.
Residents are also encouraged to consider how water impacts fire suppression, schools, hospitals, restaurants and businesses. By imagining a day without water, one can gain a deeper appreciation for this vital resource and the importance of investing in the infrastructure that delivers it to taps.
As part of the “Imagine a Day Without Water” observance, the Department of Water will be giving away a free collapsible emergency water storage jug (one per customer) at a display table in the DOW Main Lobby at 4398 Pua Loke St., Lihue, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (or while supplies last).
This token of appreciation is meant to raise awareness and encourage community engagement around the importance of reliable, safe and affordable water.
