Two of the big shopping centers on the island — Kukui Grove Center and The Shops at Kukuiula — have their gears in motion to provide a variety of family-friendly events for the fall.
Starting on Friday, Kukui Grove Center sports its fall decorations that include skeletons, spider webs and more to welcome the opening of the Halloween pop-up, MaliaKai Boo-tique, located adjacent to Jamba Juice.
Following the opening day that included free games, prizes, face painting and Showtime Characters’ appearances, MaliaKai Boo-tique will offer a wide variety of costumes, face masks and other Halloween novelties for all ages. It will be open on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 31.
Partnering with the Dog Fanciers of Kauai, a Halloween Doggie Costume contest enhanced with a Showtime Character appearance, will liven up the shopping center walkways, including near the special Kupuna Connections workshop. The costume contest starts at 2 p.m. today.
The Shops at Kukuiula announced a full lineup of family-friendly fall events, including the annual Great Pumpkin Giveaway, an outdoor movie night, and the return of Trunk-or-Treat with the Kauai Classic Cars Club.
Families are invited to kick off the festivities at The Shops with Ohana Movie Night on Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Palm Court area for a free screening of “How to Train Your Dragon (Live Action),” complete with popcorn, s’mores, and refreshments while supplies last. The movie starts at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting.
On Oct. 18, the Kapaa Middle School Choir and Ukulele Band collaborate with Kukui Grove to host Movie Night from 5 to 8 p.m. The free movie screening follows a Kauai Dance presentation that starts at 2:30 p.m.
Kukui Grove also hosts a Halloween exhibit that opens on Oct. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. The exhibit that offers a backdrop for Halloween photos is also open on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then again, from 4 to 7 p.m. during the Movie Night.
The month climaxes with Halloween that is celebrated starting as early as Oct. 22 when The Shops host the Great Pumpkin Giveaway during its weekly Kauai Culinary Market. Guests can pick up a complimentary pumpkin from 4 to 6 p.m., limited to one pumpkin per person while supplies last. The pumpkins are grown on Kauai by Aloun Farms in Kaumakani.
To round out the month, guests dressed in the best costume are invited to Trunk-or-Treat with the Kauai Classic Cars and Earthworks Pacific on Oct. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the South Parking Lot.
“We’re thrilled to continue these beloved October traditions that bring families and friends together,” said Mike Hubbard, senior property manager of The Shops at Kukuiula. “Our community partners make these celebrations truly special, and we are grateful to share in the spirit of the season with our island ohana.”
Opening on Oct. 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and continuing through Oct. 26 at Kukui Grove, the Kauai Community College Cognition Learning Center (COGS) returns its “Exploring Fear and Phobias” innovative learning experience with the help of community volunteers.
Special Halloween hours include Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then from 4 to 7 p.m. The final day of the show is on Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. and overlapping the Trunk or Treat event that starts at 3 p.m.
During the COGS run, a Halloween Dance Contest with the Jukebox Heroes will light up on Oct. 24 from 6:30 p.m., and the annual Halloween Festival takes place on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
