Halloween isn’t until Friday, but an array of Halloween activities and events drew hundreds, if not thousands, of people to different parts of the island over the weekend.
On Friday, more than 1,000 people converged at The Shops at Kukuiula for the annual Trunk or Treat. The event was presented by the Kauai Classic Cars and Earthworks Pacific, who brought out several pieces of heavy equipment from its fleet, armed with full loads of treats.
Pilare Mukai, the special events coordinator for The Shops, was pleased with the turnout, considering the competitive family-friendly events being hosted by schools on the Westside.
The Shops’ senior property manager Michael Hubbard joined the excitement by wheeling a cartload of Bubba Burger treats for the participating vendors busy distributing treats.
Saturday’s excitement included the special booth accompanied with a bounce house and menagerie of inflatable Halloween creations where Teddy Arroyo and his Pop Warner Wecon region volunteers distributed about 250 of the last of this year’s Harvest Festival free pumpkins at The Grove Farm Market.
Harvest Festival officials estimated more than 2,000 free pumpkins were distributed before Halloween.
Giveaways started with the annual Harvest Festival that, for this year, moved to the Hanapepe Athletic Park where local nonprofit groups such as the Wescon Region, the Rotary Club of West Kauai, the West Kauai Methodist Church and others offered food booth offerings and entertainment as more than 900 pumpkins were distributed to families.
A steady stream of people flocked to the Kukui Grove Center on Saturday for the Halloween Festival that featured a costume contest for age groups, the Halloween Exhibit by the Kauai Community College Cognition Learning Center, appearances by the Showtime Characters, and shopping center-wide trick or treating.
The massive undertaking was put forth with the help of the Pacific Media Group and numerous community volunteers to satisfy the Halloween thrill seekers.
A few more community events, including a keiki costume contest on Friday — Halloween — at the Little Babes Club from 9 am to noon, remain active before the spooky day.
Following Halloween, the Kauai Landscape Industry Council and its community partners celebrate Arbor Day (in Hawaii) with a free tree giveaway on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon, or whenever the supply of 1,200 native and non-native trees run out.
On Nov. 3, the Kalaheo Dental Group hosts its 10th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back from 3 to 5 p.m. at its office located in the Rainbow Plaza in Kalaheo. The Kalaheo Dental Group will buy back extra, unopened Halloween candy from keiki for $1 per pound, up to 5 pounds.
All candy donors are eligible for a prize drawing to win a $100 Small Fry Kauai gift card. The candy purchased from keiki will be combined with toothbrushes from Kalaheo Dental Group, and sent to America’s Armed Forces through Operation Shoebox.
The buyback is also being sponsored by the UPS Store in the Kukui Grove Center.
