Happy Camper for Monday, September 15, 2025

Yes, that was a bird that was circling the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium on Friday when Kapaa High School hosted its Homecoming Night football contest against Kauai High School. Thank heaven, the incident took place just after the county released a press statement; people who spotted the bird knew what to do.

And, did you know that just two minutes before the Junior Varsity contest kicked off, a 7.5 magnitude quake hit Russia? Isn’t the stadium located in an inundation zone? It’s a good thing that the tsunami officials figured out the quake did not generate any tidal impact action.

Kudos, Christina Kaser, the county’s Economic Development Specialist IV, on delivering the mayor’s and County Council’s messages to the Drive Electric Earth Month that was happening at the same time as the Great Hawaiian Trail Run (one of the EV car owners was helping park cars at that event). Kaser said this was her second big event after having to explain the Mobility Hub to the House Finance Committee during the committee’s multi-day visit to Kauai.

And squeezed between all those high school sporting events, kudos to Council Chair Mel Rapozo, who is the commissioner for the Kauai Pop Warner Football League, on getting the Jamboree season opener off the ground, and Kane Zalopany of the Koloa Baseball for getting the 17 T-ball teams from Lihue through Kekaha off the ground for their season opener on Saturday.

This weekend, the excitement moves to Sunday afternoon when the InterFaith Roundtable of Kauai hosts International Peace Day activities in Hanapepe (both at the Storybook Theater and the Kauai Soto Zen Temple), where Liz Hahn said Grammy-nominated children’s entertainer Red Grammer will be participating after doing a concert at Kukui Grove on Saturday from 11:30 a.m.
