Happy Camper for Saturday, September 6, 2025

It’s so busy, things are spilling into Sunday … Waimea Shingon Mission and Rev. Kohtoku Hirao is hosting a special interfaith service on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the legacy of the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Service starts at 9 a.m. at the Waimea Shingon Mission in Waimea Valley.

Across the island at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium, the Kauai Pop Warner Football League opens its season with the annual Pop Warner Jamboree on Sunday when the teams (yes, even cheer) march around the stadium from 9 a.m. During the festivities, the All-American Scholars will be recognized along with the league’s Volunteer of the Year. The traditional Jamboree has tackle football and flag football games following.

Also on Sunday, starting at 4 p.m. and running until 7 p.m., Lady Ipo and Friends will be playing in a special performance, Pop Up Speakeasy, at the Hale Lihue (it’s the former Yoneji Jewelry store where they used to have a soda fountain).

The family friendly fundraiser for the arts will feature live jazz, whiskey tasting, local pupu, and is sponsored by Hawaiian Telcom.

Out west, the Waimea Alumni and Friends Foundation is hosting it annual Spirit Awards and General Membership meeting on Sept. 13 at the Waimea High School cafeteria. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. with the program honoring Kay Hill, Kelvin Moniz, Patricia Pablo and Roland Pablo starting at 6:45 p.m.
