Happy Camper for Wednesday, July 2, 2025

Have you registered for one of the free backpacks that’s going to be given away during the Back to School Bash at Kukui Grove on July 12? Registration opened on Tuesday, just like the applications for the Open Doors program for preschoolers … no, it’s not at Kukui Grove.

The Back to School Bash is presented by the Hawaii Foodservice Alliance, Capt. Andy’s, the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu, and Blue Dolphin Charters, who will be helping Kukui Grove pack the school supplies that’ll be distributed on July 12.

Kudos to Jerry Hirata and the Kauai Soto Zen Temple ohana (a volunteer who came from Kaneohe earned the first Miss Flying Saucer title on Friday night) on a great bon dance over the weekend. How many people came over because The Aloha Spirit Shuttle ran on Friday from Hanapepe Art Night to the home of the original Flying Saucer?

Bon dances get a break this week — it’s the Fourth of July! — before continuing with the bon dances at the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission and Rev. Tomo Hojo on July 11 and 12 in Hanapepe.

Fourth of July revelers can enjoy the holiday at the Kukui Grove Center who will have almost everything, but the fireworks … the Paulele Market (place), in-mall tenant shopping discounts, a “Double Dollar” campaign at the Fun Factory, Showtime Characters and “The Party” after the sun starts going down.

Kudos to Ike Cockett, Sam Pratt, and all the many hands who got Kaipu 3 to run on the tracks at Haleko on the 100th anniversary (it’s also Canada Day, Miss Canada Bev Brody!) of the Baldwin locomotive (it’s the real thing) that was created in Philadelphia.
