Mahalo to the many hands that filled the World Oceans Day beach cleanup coordinated by the Outrigger Kauai Beach Resort and Hoomalu Ke Kai on Sunday, the real World Oceans Day. Jean Souza couldn’t make it because the Kauai Ocean Discovery had an open day on Sunday, and Barbara Wiedner of the Surfrider Foundation was lucky to have Brittany Cleveland available to man the Surfrider tent at Nukolii where The Red Eye Snack Shack (they got sold out, early at the Rotary Club of Kapaa 33rd Taste of Hawaii) had the burgers grilling early. The Earthday.org website said they will be releasing a report on how microplastics are affecting the human body’s major organs.
Kudos to Christina Martinay and the Kauai High School Future Farmers of America who came out on Monday to start their weekly campaign of providing shave ice during this time where it’s so hot, and it’s not even summer, yet. The FFA students will also have some member-produced jams, jellies and other goodies like fresh eggs and maybe even starters.
Kudos to Tiffany and the Kauai Menehune Kitchen who started vending at the Pau Hana Market on Monday … having veggie starters goes perfect with the selection of different breads and baked goods (is that mountain apple thingie considered a bread like the foccacia pan bread?). Even Elvrine Chow who is heading to Iceland stopped in to check out the latest offering.
OK, so what to do this weekend when the bon dance at the Waimea Shingon Mission, the Kauai Poke Festival, and The King’s Parade and Hoolaulea all happen at once? Nah, just gotta remember, Rice Street closes at around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
