LIHUE — Things are busy for the Hawaii Children’s Theatre (HCT) this weekend.
First off a one-night-only Rising Stars Showcase will be presented tonight by the HCT at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Then kicking off on Friday, and continuing through a Sunday matinée performance, the HCT Summer Stars present “Shrek the Musical, Jr.” Showtimes include Friday and Saturday, starting at 7 p.m., and Sunday, starting at 3 p.m.
Tickets are available online by visiting the Hawaii Children’s Theatre website at www.hctkauai.org.
“The children have been working very hard,” said Hawaii Children’s Theatre director Tom Frascatore. “They deserve to be seen.”
During the one-night-only Rising Stars Showcase, students in the Summer Stars Rising Stars program aged between 5 through 15 years old have the opportunity to celebrate their dedication and hard work featuring an array of fun keiki-inspired performances.
Geared for the entire family, “Shrek the Musical, Jr.” follows Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona as the trio take on fairy tale misfits, including a tiny villain, and a fire-breathing dragon in a tale of friendship and self-acceptance.
Performed by the HCT Summer Stars, the stage presentation is full of music, laughs and a lot of heart.
Adding to the excitement of the student performers, the Hawaii Children’s Theatre has been selected as a recipient of the 2024-2025 Stand For The Arts Award presented by Ovation TV and Spectrum.
The Stand For The Arts Award comes with a $10,000 contribution to help support the HCT mission of providing affordable arts education, performance opportunities and creative expression for youth across the island.
The award will be presented on stage at 6 p.m. on the opening night of “Shrek the Musical, Jr.,” Friday during a special red carpet celebration with food, and of course, the dazzling student performance.
Starting July 24, and continuing on Thursdays through Sundays until Aug. 10, the Hawaii Children’s Theatre After Dark program presents “Something Rotten.”
