Hawaii gets vaccine shipment

Hawaii received its first shipment of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine Monday.

Produced by the Massachusetts-based biotechnology firm, 12,000 doses of the vaccine were delivered to the state Monday. Half of those doses will be administered on Oahu, while Hawaii, Kauai and Maui each will receive 2,000 doses.

The same day the vaccine arrived, 134 new COVID-19 cases were reported statewide, bringing the statewide cumulative total to 20,351. So far, 1,413 of the state’s COVID-19 cases have required hospitalization.

Of the Monday cases, 13 were reported on the Big Island, bringing the island’s total to 1,816.

The total number of cases on Oahu is now 17,158.

The total number of deaths in the state remains 282, with none occurring Monday.

Within the past two weeks, there have been 1,688 new cases in the state.

A day before the arrival of the vaccine, more than 13,000 travelers arrived in the state, more than 7,000 of whom traveled here for vacation, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
