Hawaiian Health Fair is free on Saturday

LIHUE — There will be a free plant giveaway while supplies last, free resources for the entire ohana, and even free basic haircuts from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday during the Kulia I Ka Nu‘u Hawaiian Health Fair Kauai at the Kauai Museum, which observes Kama‘aina days during the weekends.

Funded by the Department of Health, the Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society, the KekuaAloha Foundation, and the Kauai Museum, the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., celebrates women’s health and Hawaiian music with performances from Troy and Puni Waialeale and halau, the Kapaa Middle School Chorus and Ukulele Band, Hiipoi Kanahele Vakamelau, Lady Ipo Kahaunaele and Friends, and fashions by Kauai designer Barbara Green.

Aunty Kuuipo Kumukahi will be doing a special guest appearance at the gathering in the Kauai Museum courtyard, where this year’s lei contest was featured.

During the day, special guest speakers, such as Kauai Museum Executive Director Chuck Boy Chock, will discuss different aspects of Hawaiian health.

Chucky Boy opens the series with a presentation on Queen Kapiolani and Alii Wahine.

Dr. Lysa Kalani Kama-Carr of the Department of Education will discuss Healthy Hawaiian cultural practice, and Registered Nurse Steph Edwards will discuss Brain Trauma.

Kumuhana o Anahola Executive Director Rae Nam will talk on Safe Pathways for Healthy Ohana, and Hawaiian Cultural Practitioner Emmalani Makepa-Foley will present on Laau Lapaau.
