HMC grand opening on Sparky’s birthday

HANAPEPE — A limited number of tickets are available on Eventbrite for the grand opening of the Heritage Media Center scheduled for Oct. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m.

That date, Oct. 8, marks late U.S. Sen. Sparky Matsunaga’s 105th birthday, and was selected for the grand opening of the Heritage Media Center.

The admission ticket will also gain entrance to the viewing theatre where the podcast, “Sparky Would Go” will be shown throughout the evening. The 25-minute podcast features video captured by Dr. Robert Zelkovsky of Kumu Sabra Kauka and members of Na Pali Coast ‘Ohana on-site in Nualolo Kai valley on Na Pali Coast.

Additionally, on Oct. 8, an “Sparky’s Bento Box of Assorted Flavors” created by MCS Grill will be available to purchase separately. The bento tickets can be ordered by calling 808-335-0712 for pickup at the Storybook Theatre from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mark Jeffers, the Storybook Theatre executive director, said the real story with the bento is that MCS Grill’s Chimes’ mom Debbie gets real excited when asked to create something special for a kau kau box fundraiser.

People are welcomed to bring a lei for the Sparky statue in the Sparky’s Garden where Hawaiian musician Michael Barretto &Friends will provide live entertainment starting at 6:30 p.m.

Jeffers announced that the Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe will be opening its front doors, again.

“For three afternoons weekly, local families and island visitors will have the opportunity to learn first hand about Kaua‘i culture, and the people who live and love it,” Jeffers said in a release. “They can do this through the Storybook Theatre’s new Heritage Media Center that will include interpretive exhibits about plantation life, pre-contact Hawai‘i, pidgin English, and the life and times of Kaua‘i Hero for Peace, Sen. Sparky Matsunaga.”

The Heritage Media Center will include three interpretive exhibit areas, a visit to Sparky’s Garden, and a small viewing theatre for s

lected historic videos. Admission is free of charge with a suggested donation box at the entrance.

The HMC tour will be hosted by trained volunteers who will talk story with visitors in a socially distant manner in accordance with state COVID-19 guidelines.
