Injured Kalalau hiker rescued

LIHUE — Personnel from the Kauai Fire Department rescued an injured 53-year-old visitor near Hanakapiai Beach the Kalalau Trail on Wednesday.

According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report of a distressed hiker shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Personnel with Lihue Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident.

First responders arrived on the scene and discovered the injured hiker at Hanakapiai Beach with an alleged heart issue. The hiker was then short hauled to the Hanakapiai Stream landing zone and loaded into the helicopter, where they were taken to Princeville Airport. Upon landing at Princeville Airport, the hiker was transferred to American Medical Response for medical care.

The scene was cleared shortly after 12 p.m.
