LIHUE — All the credit unions on Kauai will be celebrating Thursday, which is recognized as International Credit Union Day.
The week of Oct. 13-17 is recognized as International Credit Union Week, and each of the credit unions will mark the occasion with celebrations of their own.
“International Credit Union Day celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement,” said Terri Kaniho of Gather Federal Credit Union. “The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history, promote its achievements, and share member experiences and to promote awareness of, and support of, the credit union difference.”
Gather FCU is a member of “Kauai’s credit unions” that collectively act and respond to a common community initiative such as food drives, and in the past, a collective Back to School need for school supplies.
Gather FCU has branches from Kilauea to Waimea. Other credit unions belonging to the hui include the Garden Island Federal Credit Union with branches in Kapaa, Koloa, and soon, Hanapepe; the Kauai Federal Credit Union;vthe Kauai ‘Ohana Federal Credit Union; and the McBryde Federal Credit Union.
The proclamation announcing ICU Day, that has been celebrated since the third Thursday in October since 1948, states that credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, democratically owned and operated, and founded by people working together toward economic advancement.
Credit unions embrace a “people-helping-people” philosophy through the pooling of personal resources and leadership abilities for the good of the cooperative, empowering members to improve their financial futures and uniting to help those in need.
With a 2025 theme of “Cooperation for a Prosperous World,” credit unions have championed the idea that people from all walks of life should have access to affordable financial services offered by credit unions.
Credit unions empower people to improve their economic situations in 104 nations around the world at more than 74,000 credit unions that serve the financial needs of 411 million members, including slightly less than 61,000 credit union members on Kauai, associated through local, state, regional, and international organizations sharing the same commitment to serving credit union members.
Each of the credit unions on the island will have their own celebrations during the ICU Week with many electing to celebrate on ICU Day. Individuals and families are invited to visit any of the credit unions to celebrate International Credit Union Day.
