It’s Fire Prevention Week!

The Kauai Fire Department announced the launch of 2025 Fire Prevention Week, which will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kauai Philippine Cultural Center located near the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.

This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” and the Kauai Fire Department and other community partners will be available to educate the public on how to reduce the risks of fire associated with lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries power a wide range of everyday devices, including cell phones, laptop computers, e-bikes, power tools, and household appliances.

While efficient and widely used, lithium-ion batteries can pose serious fire hazards if not handled, charged, or stored correctly. This makes it essential for residents to understand safe practices such as using the correct charging equipment, avoiding counterfeit batteries, and keeping batteries away from flammable materials.

In partnership with the National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, the Kauai Fire Department is committed to protecting lives and property by sharing resources, training, and educational materials to help residents recognize and prevent battery-related fires.

These resources, and more, will be available to the public, notably, families with their keiki who have an opportunity to meet the Kauai Fire Department and community partner heroes, familiarize themselves with the tools used by the first responders, and even be able to get an up-close tour of a fire apparatus.

Fire Prevention Week, celebrated from Oct. 5 through 11, this year, provides an opportunity for residents of Kauai to learn more about fire prevention, prepare their homes and families with safe practices, and support the firefighters and first responders who dedicate themselves to keeping our community safe.
