LIHUE — The Kapaa High School boys bowling team won the season opening matches of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation bowling season that rolled on Thursday at Kauai Bowl.
Led by Aaden Aquias who rolled a pair of 200 games in his three matches, the Kapaa boys piled up a 2,645 pinfall to outdistance both the Kauai and Waimea high school teams.
Kapaa Coach Kevin Gusman, speaking ahead of the first rolls, was feeling pretty confident about his boys’ turnout of nine bowlers.
On the girls’ lanes, just three pins separated the Kauai and Waimea girls teams resulting in both teams being tied for first place. Led by Casselle Luis and Rhyanna Castro, the Red Raider ladies piled up a 1907 pinfall compared to the Menehune’s 1904 pinfall led by Tiana Abalos and Eliza Ramirez.
“This was an exciting and competitive first week of bowling,” said Waimea Coach Keiko Sagawa-Pananganan. “We can expect this season to be a tight race til the end.”
The next KIF bowling matches will roll on Thursday at the Kauai Bowl. Warm-ups start at 4 p.m.
