KILAUEA — Kapaa High School girls cross country team pushed four of its five scoring runners across the finish line on Saturday in the Top 10 positions to win the girls race during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country meet that was held by host Kauai Christian Academy in Kilauea.
During the boys’ race, Kauai High School boys’ cross country team pushed all five of its scoring runners across the finish line in the Top 10 to win that division with 27 points.
Kapaa boys, whose first finisher, Colten Nagahisa, crossed the line in fourth at 19 minutes, 54.43 seconds, had two runners finish in the Top 10, and the remaining three scorers in the Top 20 for second place with 54 points.
Cedric Crampton-Nabaa crossed first overall for the Waimea High School boys on an 18:52.90 run, one of only two runners who broke the 19-minute mark.
With three Menehune finishing in the Top 10, Waimea boys slipped into third place at 57 points, just three points off the Kapaa pace.
Island School, whose first scoring runner crossed in 11th place, finished with 78 points, followed by Kauai Christian Academy boys at 149 points.
After placing individual runners in the KIF competition, a KCA parent said this is the first time the Kilauea school could actually field a team with five runners.
KCA also fielded participants in the KIF air riflery program that was enjoying its first season outing at the Island School range.
KCA fell just short of coming up with a girls’ team with four girls participating in the Saturday meet. It was the first wahine finisher, Alexi Audiss, who crossed in 21st place with 30:15.17, about nine ticks ahead of fellow KCA runner Alivia Garcia, who crossed 23rd overall at 30:36.85.
Ashlyn Worley set the pace for the Kapaa wahine, crossing second to the 5,000-meter run’s winner, Aileah Villatora, who stopped the clocks at 24:41.76. Worley followed at 24:52.85, and Lucy Smith filled in the No. 4 spot, overall.
Villatora, the defending female champion from 2024, set the pace for the Kauai girls, who finished with 49 points after their top three scoring runners finished in the Top 10.
Island School girls finished with 56 points after the Voyagers’ top runner, Eva-Rose Rapp, came in third overall on a 25:16.51. She was joined in the Top 10 by Zoe Dorow Mochary, who finished seventh overall at 26:01.17.
Waimea girls, whose first finisher, Seija Carter, finished ninth overall at 27:11.59, finished with 85 points.
Kauai High School will host the next KIF cross country on Saturday at the Kauai Community College campus near the gazebo. The first race starts at 7:30 a.m.
