Kapaa spreads out 28-7 win in Kauai Interscholastic Federation football

HANAPEPE — Kapaa’s Kaisen Mundon pulled in a scoring pass and rushed for a touchdown to lead the Warriors to a 28-7 win over Waimea High School on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation football games played at Hanapepe Stadium.

With a minute and 42 seconds remaining in the Junior Varsity game, Waimea’s Brayden Ramos intercepted a JV Warrior pass and ran the ball back for touchdown to keep Waimea from being shut out, 27-6 as the JV game closed when the Menehune’s Point After Touchdown came up empty.

Kapaa, the defending KIF football champion and Division I representative from the KIF, successfully capped its first possession with a touchdown when Warrior quarterback Kaitin Mundon passed to Kaisen Mundon in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

After bobbling the PAT snap, Kapaa took an early 6-0 lead with 5:22 showing in the first quarter.

Waimea, the KIF Division II representative to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association football playoffs, failed to capitalize on its opening possession, and failed to keep the drive alive that was triggered after the defensive forces sacked the Warrior QB on its own 24-yard stripe,

Sonny Thomas capitalized on the turnover by finding the end zone at the end of a 29-yard push. Kapaa also reaped a two-point conversion for the 14-0 bulge at the break.

Warrior defender Takazee Thomas set up the next Warrior score in the third quarter when he intercepted a Kolby Correa pass. Kapaa capitalized on the turnover when Kaisen Mundon scored his second TD of the night, a 29-yard run with less than three minutes peeled off the third quarter. Yair Antonio booted the PAT for the 21-0 bulge.

Waimea answered in the ensuing drive that started when Menehune Ikaika Miyashiro fielded the kickoff on the Waimea 6-yard stripe. During the 96-yard drive, Menehune QB Correa hit Nash Schaefer on a long pass play that set up the score on Kapaa’s 6-yard line.

Correa hit Shaefer for the score on the next play from scrimmage, and the Brayden Wilson PAT boot with 7:06 showing in the third quarter put Waimea on the board for the first time during the night that was punctuated with rain blowing down off the Kalaheo plateau.

Amanaki Tuulangavalu broke out of traffic for 18 yards and Kapaa’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter with 7:28 showing on the game clock. Yair booted the PAT that shut the lights on a 28-7 scoreboard reading.

Waimea will host Kauai High School on Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium. The JV game kicks off at 4 p.m. with the varsity contest starting 30 minutes after the JV game ends.

Because the contest is being held during the Sept. 15 through Dec. 15 fledging season, spectators are encouraged to be aware of seabirds making their way to the ocean. Spectators are asked to report any downed birds to the monitors near the stadium entrance, and keep their areas clear of trash because the stadium lights will shut off 30 minutes following the football game.
