Kapaa, Voyagers win Friday Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball games

LIHUE — All four Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball member schools lost their respective series during the Friday night outings that were played at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea and the new Kauai High School gymnasium.

According to KIF official Tori Kagawa, the host Waimea High School split its series with Island School. The junior varsity Menehune took all three of its matches against the JV Voyagers — 25-20, 25-19 and 17-15.

The varsity squads battled for three straight sets before Island School emerged victorious — 29-25, 28-26 and 25-22.

Over at the Kauai High School gymnasium, the JV Red Raiders were victorious, 25-13, 15-17 and 15-10 over the JV Warriors whose team spirit and enthusiasm belied the court action.

The varsity Lady Warriors, garbed in pink in observance of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, watched and cheered the JV squad for two sets before adjourning for warmups. On their return to the courts, Kapaa took the Red Raiders in three consecutive sets, 25-8, 25-16 and 25.17.

Lady Warriors Carlyn Kamoku, Khloe Grove, Ku‘uipo Hunt and a Kapaa block hammered the Lady Warriors to a 19-6 lead in the first set. A Red Raiders’ Camryn Yates hammer resulted in Point No. 7, but a service error gave Kapaa the 20-7 bulge.

The Lady Warriors erred in the service block for Kauai’s eighth point before Lady Warrior Aedyn Umalla served up to the 25-8 final. In the string to the final, Kamoku had three straight hits, Kapaa put up a block, and Lady Warrior Maka Rivera put the period on the match.

Kapaa High School, undefeated in the KIF Round 1 with six wins, sets the pace in Round 2 with its second victory.

Kapaa next hosts Waimea High School on Tuesday at the Bernice Hundley Gym, and Island School hosts Kauai High School at the Wilcox Gymnasium.

The JV games at both sites serve up from 5 p.m. with the varsity contests starting 25 minutes following the end of the JV games.
