Kapaa, Waimea shine during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball

LIHUE — Kapaa High School girls volleyball improved to four wins and no losses or ties, following an outing on Thursday against the Island School Voyagers during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation matches that played before the OC16 video cameras.

On the same night, playing before a near-capacity audience at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, Waimea downed the host Red Raiders in straight sets to improve to 2-wins, 2-losses on the season that still has a lot of volleyball to play.

Waimea’s Cailey Delanoza-Vea finished with 17 kills, six aces, and had nine digs to lead the Menehune win in three straight sets — 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20.

Delanoza-Vea got help from Milana Schaefer who filled in the rotation and finished the night with 11 kills, an ace, eight digs, and had an assist. Other Menehune figuring in the win include Alyssa Gummerus ending the night with five kills, an ace and four digs, and Lokahi Malama had four kills and a dig. Settters Laakea Kauwe and Raniah Constantino had 17 and 19 assists, respectively, and Menehune libero Chaslee Aki had 10 digs and an assist.

Kauai’s heavy hitter, Kamryn Yates recorded a dozen kills with nine digs, and an assist, followed by Leila Caoagas anchoring the opposite side with eight kills, three digs and a pair of assists. Kauai middle, Emily Wyszogrodzki, went up for four kills, three digs and an assist, while setter Nevaeh Smith finished with a kill, seven digs and 24 assists. Raider libero Jorey Ellamar also had a kill, and recorded 11 digs.

On the Warriors’ courts that opened the night of televised games, the Lady Warriors kept its winning ways by downing Island School in straight sets — 25-22, 25-16 and 25-15.

Kapaa strong hitters Carlyn Kamoku and Kuuipo Hunt combined for 27 kills in the night where the Warriors overwhelmed the Voyagers. Hunt finished with 14 kills, notched a pair of aces and had eight digs. Hunt’s court versatility sparkled with 13 kills, 10 digs, a pair of aces and an assist.

Setter Kanai Silva finished with an ace, 25 assists and nine digs, and libero Mandy Gokan had a pair of aces, nine digs and four assists.

Cassidy Rogoff took up main hitting responsibility for the Voyagers, finishing with eight kills and 10 digs. Preslie Lanini followed with eight kills and a dig, with Daisy Keller finishing with four kills and three digs. Voyager setter Naia Char peeled off an ace, had eight digs and a dozen assists. Island School libero Maiha Kjeldsen served up an ace, had 13 digs and four assists.

The next KIF girls volleyball games serve up on Tuesday evening when Kapaa comes to visit Kauai at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, and Waimea hosts Island School at the Clem Gomes Gym.

The first serve for the Junior Varsity contests go at 5 p.m. with the varsity games following, 25 minutes after the JV contest ends.
