Kauai boys, Kapaa girls take Saturday’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country

KAPAA — Waimea boys runner Cedric Crampton-Nabaa was the first overall finisher on Saturday, and Micah Kelly of the Kauai Christian Academy finished first for the Kilauea school during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country races hosted by Kapaa High School.

On the girls’ course, Aileah Villatora of Kauai High School crossed the finish line in first place overall, and Alivia Garcia claimed the first-to-finish banner for the Kauai Christian Academy in the race where the morning heat and humidity slowed the field of 46 runners over the 5,000-meter course.

Overall, the Kauai High School boys took the title banner with 36 points after the Raiders’ top five scoring runners finished in the Top 13 in the field of 72 boys.

Red Raider runner Liam Juvan improved his finish from last week’s race, jumping to finish second overall on a run that stopped the clocks at 17 minutes, 42.31 seconds, nearly a second better than fellow runner Tai Ito-Fernandez who stopped the clocks at 17:43.68 in the fast boys’ race where the Top 19 runners broke the 20-minute mark.

Waimea’s Crampton-Nabaa set the pace at 17:23.69 to lead the Menehune males to a second place finish at 46 points after its top five scoring runners finished in the Top 19 compared to Kauai High School’s Top 13.

Kapaa High School boys finished in third place with 57 points, and Island School, despite its lead runner, Kyler Greenleaf clocked a fourth overall finish over Kapaa’s fifth overall finish, walked off with 85 points.

Kauai High School girls runner Aileah Villatora set the pace for the Girls 5,000 Meter by stopping the clock at 20:41.71. However, the Red Raider ladies finished in third place with 74 points when its five scoring runners finished in the Top 24, its second runner crossing the finish line in eighth place following Villatora.

Ashley Worley of the Kapaa’s girls team was on Villatora’s tail, finishing second overall on a run that stopped the clocks at 20:49.38, nearly eight ticks behind the Kauai multi-sport athlete. Kapaa finished with 37 points after the Warriors’ top five scoring runners finished in the Top 13.

Hot on Worley’s tracks, Island School’s Eva-Rose Rapp crossed the finish line in third, overall, stopping the clocks on a 21:25.84 run. Rapp’s efforts were bolstered by Zoe Dorow Mochary and Cora Rosenthal finishing in fifth and sixth places, respectively.

But the gap between the Voyagers’ top three scoring runners, and the cluster of four Voyagers swarming the finish line was not enough to get past Kapaa as Island School finished with 45 points, 12 points back of Kapaa.

The Kauai High School girls went home with 74 points and third place, just two points better than Waimea who finished in fourth place and 76 points.

The next KIF cross country race is scheduled for Saturday with the first races scheduled to start at 4 p.m., hosted by Waimea High School. This is the same date and time for the Kauai High School homecoming football game that will be played at Hanapepe Stadium with the junior varsity contest kicking off at 4 p.m.

Following a week’s rest for Fall Break, the KIF Championship cross country races will be hosted by Island School starting at 7:30 a.m., the same date as the publicized community Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s that is scheduled to take place at the Puakea Golf Course on Oct. 18.
