LIHUE — The Waimea High School girls air riflery team outpointed the three other school teams, including the Kauai High School girls on Saturday to force a shootoff during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation Championships that was held — for the first time — at the Kauai High School range.
Waimea High School air riflery coach Vincent Freeman said the shootoff on Tuesday will be held in the Clem Gomes Gym starting at 5 p.m. to determine the KIF champions, and who will represent the KIF at the 2025 Hawaii Army National Guard Hawaii High School Athletic Association Air Riflery State Championships that will contest on Nov. 4 at the Neil Blaisdell Center on Oahu.
“The Menehune Girls were led by Alexandria Bueno with an expert score of 255,” Freeman said. “The Waimea Boys team finished in second place to the defending state champion Kauai High School Red Raiders. The top boys shooter for the Menehune was senior Gian Gawaran with a score of 249.”
The Kauai High School girls team, with recorded victories during the KIF season, was outpointed on Saturday 1,241-1,218 points, just 29 points. The Kauai High School girls were led by Emma Luczon with her score of 253.
The Kauai High School boys, led by the high score of 264 shot by Keegan Ushio, claimed the KIF championship on 1264 points over Waimea High School boys who finished with a score of 1,208.
Freeman said during this KIF Championship season, the Menehune marksmen are simultaneously competing in the Champion Division of the National Sporter 3-position Air Rifle League in a postal match this week, versus Georgetown, South Carolina.
