LIHUE — With just a week remaining in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation Bowling season, Kauai High School girls have already locked up the championship and will be representing the KIF at the 2025 Hawaii Army National Guard Hawaii High School Athletic Association Bowling State Championship that will contest on Nov. 6-7 at the Schofield Bowling Center on Oahu.
Despite the Red Raider wahine already locking up the title, Waimea High School girls still put on a strong challenge during last week’s matches that rolled at the Kauai Bowl. The Menehune wahine pulled ahead of Kauai by a scant 33 pins — 1868 total pinfall to Kauai’s 1835 — and both teams were awarded 10 points.
High rollers for Waimea belonged to Kyana Sagawa-Pananganan who posted a 171 pinfall in her third match, and Tiana Abalos who marked a 165 in her second match. High roller honors for Kauai belonged to Yasmien Panoy who marked scores of 180 in the first match, 141 in the second match and 128 in the third match.
The battle for the girls single slot individual entry is also up for grabs with the individual averages of less than half a pin difference, said Kauai High School Coach Kyrin Sasaki.
“Week No. 5 is in the books,” Sasaki said. “Here are the standings on the boys side — Waimea 2, Kauai 2, Kapaa 1. With just a week remaining, a 2-way, or even a 3-way, tie is a possibility.”
“If that does happen, a tie breaker will be conducted shortly following Game 3,” Sasaki said. “Tie breaker consists of a 5-person team roll off, one game. The winner of Game 4 wins the KIF title and heads to the HHSAA state tournament.”
“As I’ve said before, if you haven’t been to a bowling match this season and have been debating about it, you won’t want to miss this next match,” Sasaki said. “There is so much on the line, it should be a nail biter.”
Waimea High School boys captured Week No. 5 with a total pinfall 2,622, and 12 points. Kauai High School boys followed with 2,398 pinfall and seven points. The Warriors ended with a 2,285 pinfall and five points.
Kanuikapono fielded just two bowlers and were not eligible for team scoring.
“The close competition and sportsmanship has been great for our boys,” said Kanuikapono Coach Keaka Morita. “They have developed a passion for the sport, and all of them intend to continue bowling.”
The next KIF Bowling matches take place on Thursday at the Kauai Bowl in the Rice Shopping Center. Doors open at 4 p.m. for warmups that start at shortly before 4:30 p.m.
