Kauai, Kapaa pick up Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball wins

KAPAA — Kauai High School girls volleyball topped Island School, and Waimea High School split its series with Kapaa on Tuesday night during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation contests waged at two different locations.

Kauai High School, with a win in the KIF Round 1, swept both ends of their series with Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium. The Junior Varsity Red Raiders picked up the victory in three sets, 25-15, 25-17, and 15-12.

On the varsity floor, Kauai High School picked up its first win in the second round in three sets, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-15 over Island School.

Over at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa, Waimea High School JV was a 2-1 winner over the JV Warriors, 25-13, 25-15 and 10-15.

On the varsity court, the Warrior hitters came to play, and Kapaa, undefeated in league play, picked up the victory in three sets, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-12.

Led by Kapaa senior Carlyn Kamoku, the Warriors unleashed a corps of smackers that gave the Menehune problems with getting the passing game going. Kamoku was joined by Kuuipo Hunt, and the pair got solid support from Jennifer Guerin and Khloe Grove.

Kapaa Coach Paea Tafea drove the hometown audience wild in the third set when she substituted other hitters, including Chloe Woodward, Tyra Carvalho and Mehana Guy who nailed the Aloha Ball in the third set.

Coming from a 16-25 deficit following the first set, Waimea responded in the second set by tying the matchup on nine different instances. Kapaa broke an 11-11 deadlock on a Menehune hitting error for Point 12, but Waimea stalemated the contest when Lokahi Malama went down the middle to knot things at 13-13.

Kapaa broke a 15-15 logjam with back-to-back whacks from Guerin, and a Waimea net violation for the three-point lead. Kapaa suffered a multiple hit violation and a net violation to keep Waimea in the chase, 17-18.

Aedyn Umalla served up three from the service block, enhanced with hits from Grove and Guerin for the 21-17 gap before Maka Rivera sealed the deal.

KIF Girls Volleyball continues on Friday night when Waimea comes to visit Kauai High School at the new gymnasium, and Island School travels to the Bernice Hundley Gym to test against Kapaa. The JV games at both venues serve up from 5 p.m. with the varsity contest starting 25 minutes following the completion of the JV games.
