Kauai Society of Artists BIG show opens Friday with reception

LIHUE — Big art pieces competed for space to hang on Saturday as the Kauai Society of Artists hosted its Entry Day for Art Kauai 2025, which opens with the reception on Friday, Sept. 12.

The opening reception that offers nearly $7,000 in cash award prizes, a record-breaking high for KSA, runs from 5 to 8 p.m., at the KSA gallery located in the Kukui Grove Center adjacent to Small Fry and Bubbah’s Toy Box, and is made possible through the generous Award Sponsors, including Ken Tubman, Stuart Suna, S.G. Builders, KSA, Rose Anne Jones, Donna Olson, and the Garden Island Arts Council.

“This year’s juror, Tom Klobe of Honolulu, will be selecting the exhibited works and awarding top honors,” said Rose Anne Jones. “And, if you can’t make it to the Juror’s Talk, no worries — Tom will be at the Opening Reception and is happy to chat with artists during the event.”

Klobe, of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Department, Professor Emeritus and Founding Director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, will be jurying Art Kauai 2025, and will be at the KSA Juror’s Talk that will take place on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Lihue Public Library Community Room.

“I hope mine are good enough,” said Pam Woolway, a former news writer who is working with ceramics. “We’ve been working at the Kauai Community College studio until they closed down the program.”

Frank Rothschild had never worked with black glass until this Art Kauai project, which was laid out by his “darling Evelyn.”

“I’ve never worked with black glass before,” Frank said. “I’m hoping this is good enough. We’ll see if the juror agrees.”

Following the reception, the Art Kauai 2025 Juried Exhibition opens on Saturday and will remain open through Oct. 24. There is no admission to view KSA’s biggest art show of the year, although donations are always gratefully accepted. The Art Kauai 2025 is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. Friday special hours are from noon to 7 p.m.

KSA is 100 percent volunteer-powered and relies on help with intake days, gallery setup, event photography, music, and more. For more information, visit the KSA website at www.kauaisocietyofartists.org.

Following the Art Kauai 2025 Juried Exhibition, KSA will close the year with the Small Work/Big Show that is scheduled to run Nov. 22 through Jan. 2.
