LIHUE — Just two points separated first and second place during the girls race at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross-country event that was run on Saturday afternoon at Kauai Community College and hosted by Kauai High School.
The Kapaa High School girls team squeezed out 32 points to take its fourth straight victory after placing its five scoring runners in the top 10 finishers.
Island School, settled for 34 points and second place after its fifth scoring runner crossed the finish line in 12th place. The Voyagers led the Warriors after its first two runners finished in second and third place.
But Kapaa interrupted the Voyager scoring when four Warrior runners filled in the fourth through seventh places, consecutively. Kapaa secured the berth when its final scoring runner stopped the clocks in 10th place.
Kauai High School, whose Aileah Villatora set the field’s pace with her first overall finish, ended in third place with 66 points. Waimea High School girls tallied 110 points.
Kauai Christian Academy, finishing with its four participating runners crossing in the top 22 spots, was not eligible for team scoring in the 39-runner field.
On the boys course, Waimea High School runner Cedric Crampton-Nabaa set the pace for the 61-runner field by crossing first at 19 minutes, 4.19 seconds.
He was pursued by a pair of Kauai runners, Kobe Claussen and Liam Juvan, who broke the 20-minute mark for second and third place. Those performances helped the Kauai High School boys capture top honors with 34 points after the five scoring runners finished in the top 12.
Crampton-Nabaa paced the Menehune to a second place showing at 51 points after Waimea’s five scoring runners finished in the top 18.
Kapaa High School finished third with 68 points, just a point better than Island School, which finished with 69 points.
With a week off for the fall break, the next cross-country race will be the KIF Championship meet on Oct. 19, starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Island School course.
