LIHUE — Waimea High School and Kauai High School air rifle teams swept their respective matches on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches contested at the Kauai High School and Island School ranges.
Waimea High School boys team finished with 1,157 team points over 880 team points put up by the Island School boys, and 784 team points put up by the Kauai Christian Academy boys. The leading Menehune marksman was Gian Gawaran who piled up 254 points after nailing 86 points in the prone position, 84 points in the standing position, and 84 points in the kneeling position.
Alexandria Bueno was the top Menehune sharpshooter with 257 points following her shooting where she picked up 94 points in the prone position, 79 points in the standing, and 84 points in the kneeling position, and leading the Lady Menehune to 1176 team points.
The Lady Voyagers piled up 1024 points behind Reese Wells finishing with 229 points. The Kauai Christian Academy did not field a wahine team.
Over at the Kauai High School range, the host Red Raider boys, winners of the state title in 2024, carded a day’s high 1268 points behind the shooting of Keegan Ushio who finished with 260 points (85 points in the kneeling, 93 points in the prone position, and 82 points in the standing position).
The Red Raider ladies topped the Kapaa High School girls with 1180 points to Kapaa’s 1,142 points set by their top two shooters, Dallas Sheldon who finished with 250 points, and Christy Heath who ended with 245 points.
Kauai’s top two female sharpshooters included Taylee Yoshimoto and Caylee Garma each marking 244 points.
That still put Kapaa up 495 points to Kauai’s 488 points.
Kauai’s No. 3 shooter, Makani Ringor finished with 233 points to tie with Kapaa’s No. 3 shooter, Kamaile Cacal-Wong who also finished with 233 points. The tie-breaker came with Kauai’s No. 4 shooter Emma Luczon who finished with 231 points compared with Kapaa’s No. 4 shooter, Gaberille Shimamoto finishing with 210 points.
This sets up a showdown on Saturday when Waimea High School faces Kauai High School at the Kauai High School range, the first shots going at 10 a.m.
Kapaa High School will face off against Island School, and the KCA boys on Saturday at the Island School range, also starting at 10 a.m.
