Kauai Community College students Meghann Matsuda and Meagan Luoma placed second in the student entrepreneurship challenge held Oct. 13 and 14 at Newport Beach, Calif.
The entrepreneurship challenge was a national competition. Matsuda and Luoma qualified for by placing in the top five of the student entrepreneurship challenge.
The team was assigned to address a local problem regarding the quality of education and literacy and were given three weeks to come up with an adequate solution.
The students developed a concept after learning about the local annual turnover rate of teachers.
Matsuda and Luoma came up with a solution to reduce the teacher turnover rate by subsidizing or providing free housing utilizing the tourism industry to provide shelter, including hotels and vacation rentals.
