LIHUE — The Kapolei High School Hurricanes blew over Kapaa High School, 35-0 on Saturday on Oahu.
And on Friday at the Hanapepe Stadium, Kauai High School quarterback passed for three touchdowns to lead the 22-12 win over the Buckeye Union Hawks of Arizona.
Those results wrap up the Kauai Interscholastic Federation preseason as Waimea High School, visiting the Kauai and Buckeye Union contest as spectators, takes on Kauai High School on Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium. Kauai is the home team, but due to renovation work being done at Vidinha Stadium, the Red Raiders opted to use Hanapepe Stadium as its home field for this KIF football season.
The Junior Varsity contest kicks off from 4 p.m. followed by the varsity game starting 30 minutes following the completion of the JV contest.
According to Scoring Live.com, who assisted with the off-island Kauai contests, Kapolei quarterback Jacob Ballesteroes threw for two touchdowns, and runningback Chazz-Michael Kapahu rushed for two touchdowns in the 35-0 victory.
Back at Hanapepe Stadium on Friday night, Kauai Hight School needed two tries to break into the scoreboard on its first drive of the night. With 4:29 showing in the first quarter, Red Raider Jonah Javinar found the end zone at the end of a 4-yard push.
But the scoring play was invalidated by a penalty and the Red Raiders tried again, the second attempt being nailed when Asa Bailey pulled in a 5-yard scoring pass from quarterback Kaimana Inouye. Chance Kawakami iced the score with a Point After Touchdown kick.
Kauai wrangled with the rules again in the second quarter when a Ryder Agan Ramos fumble recovery in the end zone was ruled a safety rather than a fumble recovery that resulted from Red Raider Jose Mikemund knocking the ball out of the Hawks’ ball carrier Mekhi Sharper in the end zone.
The safety jump-started the Hawks who answered in the ensuing possession on a short scoring pass by quarterback Caleb Swain.
Kauai took a 15-6 bulge at the break after Inouye found Jacob Bukoski at the end of a 54-yard scoring pass with 22 seconds showing in the half.
Kauai capitalized on its first possession in the third quarter when Inouye found Karter Reichle in the end zone at the end of a 9-yard pass. Kawakami booted the PAT for the 22-6 bulge that stood until the final two minutes of play when Hawks’ Xylin Yancy broke into the end zone on a yard charge.
