LIHUE – Officer Matthew VanAken was honored for his selfless response during a rescue on the Kalalau Trail at the Kauai Police Commission meeting on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025.
On the evening of July 22, 2025, at approximately 7 p.m., Officer VanAken was flagged down by individuals reporting a missing hiker on the Kalalau Trail. Without hesitation, he proceeded to the trail to begin searching for the hiker.
Despite the onset of nightfall, Officer VanAken hiked nearly one mile into the steep and precarious terrain of the Kalalau Trail. Upon locating the distressed hiker, he found that a Good Samaritan bystander was already on scene offering assistance.
Officer VanAken assessed the hiker, who was showing signs of severe muscle cramping and dehydration, and decided to carry him to safety using the fireman’s carry technique. In this method, the rescuer lifts the injured person over their shoulders to navigate rugged terrain. Throughout the physically demanding trek back, he remained composed and attentive, keeping the hiker calm and reassured until they reached awaiting medical personnel.
Officer VanAken’s courage, composure, and compassion in the face of challenging conditions exemplify the core values of the Kaua‘i Police Department.
“Officer VanAken set aside his own safety to render aid and protect the well-being of another,” said Chief Kalani Ke. “His willingness to assume personal risk on behalf of someone in need exemplifies the highest standards of public service and police duty.”
In recognition of his heroism, Officer VanAken was formally recognized during the Kauai Police Commission meeting and awarded the Police Commendation Medal, one of the department’s highest honors.
