‘Let’s do the Time Warp again!’

LIHUE — Hawaii Community Players is producing a 50th anniversary tribute to the original “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which first appeared in 1975.

“There is a difference,” explained Jim Benkert of HCP. “The movie that screened in 1975 is called ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show,’ and the musical stage productions that drew from the film are called ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’”

The Hawaii Community Theatre, in collaboration with the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center, will host three performances of “The Rocky Horror Show” on Oct. 24 and 25 at the PAC.

In addition to the live onstage action, the PAC and the KCC Prizm Club will celebrate the 50th anniversary with a screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Nov. 21. More details will be forthcoming.

“There is a show that starts on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., and a special midnight show that starts at 11:59 p.m.,” Benkert said. “The final night is on Oct. 25, starting at 7 p.m.”

Tickets are available online at www.kauaicommunityplayers.org.

“We are so excited to bring this fun, interactive show back to Kauai,” said Lori Benkert, HCP president. “We did ‘Rocky Horror’ in our Puhi Theatrical Warehouse in 2020 (just before COVID-19 hit) to sold-out audiences.”

“Now, we have this wonderful new partnership with the Kauai Community College in a much larger space,” she said. “If you have seen ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show,’ this is the live action musical and so much more. We will be selling the ‘participation packets’ (if you know, you know) as well as snacks, alcohol and soft drinks. We encourage audience participation. Dress up, and join the party atmosphere.”

Jim Benkert said “The Rocky Horror Show” is always a fun piece to do, and not only at Halloween.

Jacyn Fain of HCP said director Jennifer Takenaka is “beyond thrilled to once again dive heels-first into the glitter, chaos and absolute fabulousness of ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’”

“Known for her love of theater that’s big, bold and full of heart, Jennifer believes this show is the ultimate celebration of true self-expression, acceptance and unapologetic weirdness,” Fain said. “She feels endlessly lucky to have worked with an out-of-this-world cast (of 15) and creative team who are truly the definition of collaboration and talent. Together, they’ve turned sweat and sheer determination into a full-blown rock ‘n’ roll fever dream.”

Takenaka is more direct.

“Huge love and gratitude to everyone who made this wild ride possible — and to the audience, for daring to come along,” Takenaka said. “Now, tighten your corsets, grab your fishnets, and remember — it’s not a show, it’s an experience.”
