Lihue fire causes $90,000 in damage

LIHUE — A structure fire caused an estimated $90,000 in damage on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters with the Kapaa, Kalaheo and Lihue fire stations responded to an emergency call shortly before 1 p.m. for reports of a structure fire on Umi Street in Lihue.

Fire crews along with the Fire Prevention Bureau, the Kauai Police Department, Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, and the on-duty Battalion Chief arrived on the scene and discovered smoke spilling from the rooftop vent of the one-story business building.

Once inside, fire crews made their way through the heavy smoke, discovered the origin of the fire and successfully extinguished it.

The Fire Prevention Bureau then conducted their investigation and estimated the damages to the structure and its contents to be $90,000. The scene was cleared shortly before 3:15 p.m. with no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
