Lihue Walmart makes 30 years; distributes $8K to local nonprofits

LIHUE — The Kauai, Waipahu and Kona Walmart stores marked 30 years since opening this week. And, as part of the 30th anniversary celebration, Walmart presented eight local nonprofits with grants from the Lihue Walmart store totaling $8,000.

On Kauai, Store Manager Seni Kaseli joined dignitaries, including Mark Perriello of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, select members of the Kauai County Council, and Gov. Josh Green’s Kauai liaison Dana Hazelton in presenting the grants.

“This is a great day to celebrate for our Walmart customers and associates,” Kaseli said. “We truly appreciate the customer and community support we have received throughout the years, and look forward to continuing to share new innovations with our customers so they can save money and live better.”

Groups receiving the $1,000 grants included the Alzheimer’s Association, Aloha Chapter, which will host its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s in October at the Puakea Golf Course; the American Cancer Society, which recently presented its 40th Relay for Life celebrating cancer survivors; and the Friends of the Hawaii Technical Academy in Lihue.

Friday was extra special for the Salvation Army, Lihue Corps that also received a $1,000 grant. Lt. Faaoloviti “Nalo” Faasavalu said his wife, Lt. Stacie, also gave birth to their latest child Friday morning.

Also receiving grants were the Rotary Club of Kauai, which presents the annual Lights on Rice holiday parade and the Old Koloa Mill run scholarship fundraiser; and Special Olympics Hawaii, which partners with Walmart and the Kauai Police Department for the annual Buckets and Badges fundraiser.

The Make A Wish Foundation and the Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network also earned grants. Additionally, according to Children’s Miracle Network, the Lihue Walmart helped raise more than $38,000 this year for the CMN/Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

Throngs of Walmart associates, excited about the specially designed, Kauai-specific store shirts, were joined by the Gather Federal Credit Union’s in-store branch by offering freshly popped popcorn to shoppers looking for the specially designed cupcakes and beverage sampling.

For those who missed the event, Walmart Lihue, Waipahu and Kona are offering unadvertised anniversary specials through Sunday, or until supplies are exhausted.

These include a Hinode 20-pound bag of rice for $13, $3 price tags for Kings Hawaiian Sweet Rolls or Savory Butter Rolls, 24-oz. Aloha Shoyu, Hormel Spam, Classic, or 25 percent less sodium and Aloha Maid Juice 6-pack, and 5-oz. can of Coral Tuna in water or oil for $1.
