Mel Rapozo jumps into Mayor’s race

LIHUE — In an Aug. 7 formal press release from Mel for Mayor 2026, the current Council Chair, Mel Rapozo, announced his candidacy for Mayor of the County of Kauai in the 2026 election.

“After careful reflection and with the full support of my family, friends, and the dedicated members of the Exploratory Committee, I am humbled to officially declare my candidacy for Mayor,” Rapozo said. “This is a decision rooted in my lifelong commitment to serve the people of Kauai and Niihau. Our island deserves strong, experienced leadership — and I am ready to be your Mayor.”

Rapozo’s decision comes after months of community engagement and internal evaluation, during which a countywide poll indicated Rapozo holding a commanding lead over other potential candidates.

The Exploratory Committee concluded that Mel Rapozo is best positioned to bring steady, effective leadership to the county and guide it toward a stronger, more sustainable future. With decades of public service experience — including multiple terms on the Kauai County Council and his current role as Chair — Rapozo has consistently advocated for public safety, responsible development, affordable housing, and preserving our island’s resilience, sustainable lifestyles, and cultural values.

“This campaign is about the future of Kauai,” Rapozo said.. “We face real challenges, but I believe we also have the heart, the talent, and the courage to meet them head-on. I’m running to ensure that government works for everyone — not just the few — and that our island stays a place where local families can thrive.

Rapozo’s campaign will launch with a series of community events over the coming weeks, designed to gather input and share his vision for Kauai’s future.
