Menehune shutout Raiders in Kauai Interscholastic Federation football

HANAPEPE — Waimea High School defensive back Kepa Pablo had two interceptions on Saturday, and the Menehune enjoyed a 10-0 victory over Kauai High School during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation football games contested at the Hanapepe Stadium.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Junior Varsity Menehune capitalized on a second quarter 12-yard scoring pass play to take a 7-0 win over JV Raiders.

The Menehune capitalized on its first possession during the varsity contest, scoring on a pass play from quarterback Kolby Correa to Kaulana Makua for 16 yards. With 5 minutes, 41 seconds showing on the first quarter, Brayden Wilson did the Point After Touchdown boot for the 7-0 bulge that stood until Waimea added a 2-point safety for the 8-0 bulge.

The Red Raiders answered the score on its ensuing possession and drove to the Waimea 5-yard line before getting stopped by Waimea’s interception of a pass from Kauai QB Mana Inouye that had a penalty attached to the play.

With 2:10 showing in the break, Pablo picked up his first interception on the Menehune 30-yard line when Inouye tried connecting to Jacob Bukoski. But Waimea could not capitalize on the turnover as, on the next play from scrimmage, Waimea turned the ball on a fumble recovery.

During the second half, Waimea attempted a pair of field goals, and was successful in the fourth quarter from the Kauai 8-yard line for the 10-0 final score. Earlier in the third quarter, the Menehune’s field goal attempt from the Raiders’ 21-yard line was blocked by Kauai’s Chance Kawakami.

With just 26 seconds remaining in the contest, Pablo plucked his second interception in the end zone to stymie the Inouye to Asher Baily connection.

The interception locked up the 10-0 victory that puts Waimea in position to represent the KIF Division II in the state games coming up in November. The contest was waged on the ground with Correa and Paka Cintron-Chandler alternating QB duty, and the ground game was fueled by Ikaika Miyashiro (who spent the greater part of his day helping distribute vegetable starters as part of his senior project at the Kauai Healthy Living Fall Celebration).

Joining Ikaika in touching the ball, Kaikea Miyashiro, Cintron-Chandler, and even Jayden Sablan had a chance to pound the Hanapepe turf.

The next KIF football games take place on Saturday when the Red Raiders host Kapaa High School during its homecoming contest at Hanapepe Stadium. The JV game is scheduled to kick off from 4 p.m. with the varsity contest starting 30 minutes following the end of the JV contest.

Due to the fledging of seabirds making their way from the mountains to the sea, fans are asked to keep their viewing areas clear of opala, and make an efficient exit following the final whistle. The lights at Hanapepe Stadium will be killed 30 minutes after the final whistle.
