Millions coming for Head Start

LIHUE — U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will award a total of $9.7 million to Kauai’s Child & Family Service, the Honolulu Community Action Program and Maui Family Support Services and for their Head Start programs, which prepare young children for school and offer quality health services.

“Every family should have the support they need to prepare young children for the next step, and Head Start is there to make that a reality,” said Schatz in a press release. “This funding will help put more preschoolers on the right track and give Hawaii families tools and resources to help their kids succeed.”

CFS, which is receiving $1.5 million, was founded in 1899 and operates four Head Start locations across Kauai, in Kapaa, Lihue, Waimea and Koloa.
