New faces open Kauai Community College

E Komo Mai, the Kauai Community College equivalent to the “Welina Manoa” event discussed by UH News, will take place today in front of the Learning Resource Center starting at 10 a.m.

E Komo Mai, with representatives from the college’s various student-based clubs and government, is an orientation event for students to raise awareness and recruit engagement in the different groups and clubs on campus in Puhi.

KCC opened its doors to 1,347 students on Monday, according to Thomas No‘eau Keopuhiwa, KCC vice chancellor of Student Affairs. This student census is an increase of 1 percent from last year’s fall semester opening day census. Keopuhiwa said that overall, the community colleges in the University of Hawaii system showed a 2.6 percent increase from last year.

“Overall, we’re seeing an increase in in-person learning,” Keopuhiwa said. “Even in the instructors, we’re seeing more in-person teaching.”

In addition to the increase in student enrollment, KCC also has a bigger faculty and staff.

Some of these new faces were already in the community on Saturday during the Kauai County Farm Bureau’s Tribute to Past Farm Fairs and the 2025 Fruit and Vegetable Show at the Kukui Grove Center.

Brian Yamamoto of the college’s Natural Sciences department was joined by the Culinary Arts Department’s newest hires, Lizbeth Haddock and Nalani Kaneakua joining Chef Steve Nakata in doing the cooking demonstration.

“These are the college’s newest hires,” said Chancellor Margaret Sanchez. “And the sample they made was delicious.”

Another of the new faces, Chantal Zarbaugh of the Business Development office, was engaged in providing a campus tour for visiting dignitaries.

Caitlin Fowlkes of the Marketing Department was engaged in the pickleball class taught by Laura Dillman, and offered through the Office of Continuing Education and Training.

“Professor Dillman does a lot more than pickleball,” Fowlkes said. “She also teaches other classes offered through OCET.”
