HAENA — Kauai Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau officials reopened Haena and Ke‘e beaches Thursday morning after they were closed Wednesday due to a report of sharks in the area.
A man said he was surfing in waters off Ke‘e when he saw at least two sharks attack and kill a dolphin. The surfer did not sustain any injuries, brought the dolphin to shore and notified lifeguards about 9:30 a.m.
As a safety precaution, OSB officials advised no swimming until further notice from Ha‘ena to Ke‘e, and signs were posted to warn beachgoers of the shark sighting.
Lifeguards reassessed the area on Thursday morning and determined beach could be reopened.
