Kauai Fire Department firefighters extinguished two brush fires in the Pakala area, in the vicinity of Kaumualii Highway mile markers 21 and 22 on Friday, Oct. 3, 2025.
The first fire was reported shortly after 2:15 p.m. and is estimated to be 200 yards by 15 yards. The second fire was a smaller fire approximately 1 mile to the east of the larger.
No injuries or damaged structures have been reported.
Crews with the Hanapepe, Kalaheo, and Waimea fire stations, Rescue 3, Tender 3, Air 1, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to this incident. Heavy equipment was used to cut a fire break. Crews with the Department of Public Works were on standby.
Kaumualii Highway opened to alternating traffic. Westbound lane remains closed due to a compromised utility pole.

The Kauai Emergency Management Agency is monitoring the incident.
Road closures
Both lanes of Kaumualii Highway near mile markers 21 and 22 are closed at this time due to a compromised utility pole.
